Freek WAMBACQ
n collaboration with D&A Lab, Freek Wambacq created a monolithic cabinet finished with highly polished metal.
It is finished with gleaming stainless steel on the front, sides and back, allowing this piece of furniture to be freely positioned in space.
The only break in this gleaming surface occurs at the hinges and the gap between the doors. Seen from the front, the cabinet does not seem to have any corners on the side; it appears to be rounded off. The tiny key indicates that it is a cabinet.
The inside is finished with mat olive-green paint. The object’s beauty lies in the fact that the mirror’s fragility has been preserved. The cabinet has an intriguing presence. At first, it appears to be cold, but it has a
familiar appearance thanks to its human size.
To produce this piece of work, D&A Lab was in search of a gluing technique that would enable it to cover the wood construction with four large sheets of steel. After the steel sheets were rolled, D&A Lab was faced with the enormous difficulty of gluing them on without crumpling or damaging them. .

The main quality of Wambacq’s work lies essentially in his sculptural method. He thinks, sees and acts in a sculptural manner.
There is certainly no lack of choice when it comes to materials. His choice is sculptural right from the
beginning – building and DIY materials – and is often based on a sociological/cultural context.
Then there is his way of handling materials. He does not use building materials in order to incorporate
connotations associated with a metaphor; however, he always endeavours to be as consistent as possible
in the way he uses and organises the materials.
