Perry ROBERTS

D&A Lab has produced a daybed and a seat created by Perry Roberts, which are both finished off with long bands of differently coloured wool. These bands of felt, attached on one side, can be arranged in
different layers, one on top of the other, so that you can choose how you would like the seat to look.
These seats were already part of Roberts’ works. He makes no distinction between art and design.
His themes concerning choice and decision fit in perfectly with the design of these seats.

ABOUT

Born 1954 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK
Lives and works in Antwerp

One of the main themes of Roberts’ work can be described with words such as “choice”, “hesitation” and “decision”.
“I used to be indecisive, but now I’m not so sure”.
“An element present in most of my works concerns choice and/or variation.
This can appear in series of paintings, demonstrating the notion of one possibility amongst many others, or through texts on benches that “invite” the viewer to make a decision as to where to sit.
As consumers, we are spoilt with choice. Some choices are easy, others are not, but choosing one thing over
another for any reason is a commitment.
When I was working on the daybed and the stool, I immediately knew which materials I wanted to use but I
couldn’t decide on the colours. So I turned my indecision into something positive and made a piece of furniture which allows the possibility of variation.”
