James CARRIGAN
Carrigan’s proposal for D&A Lab is a simple aesthetic work. The ubiquitous scaffolding system has been reduced by 30%. All parts are remoulded and cast in aluminium. This is a clear-cut aesthetic appropriation of a truly modern modular system with a raw beauty that begs to be taken indoors.
James and D&A Lab are excited about the prospect of lining and constructing internal spaces with the scaffolding system, from floor to ceiling – constructing shelving, dividers, rooms within rooms, passageways, stairs – spaces that retain the spirit and language of the industrial or construction site, with a refinement that is designed for living.
Each certificate is linked to a minimum of one unit, but it is hoped that customers will embrace the spirit of the concept; and in keeping with the beauty of it’s modular nature, specify a made-to-measure construction for the particular architecture of their home / workspace / gallery. In this way the modularity of the system is exploited without loosing the unique character of a limited series.

ames Carrigans work explores modernity, technology, functionality and architecture and the interrelationships between the artwork, the viewer, and the gallery. He seeks to activate the gallery environment as a ‘real’ space by explicitly employing the rules of industrial and economic systems in the
production and display of the work.
