D&ALab (Design and Art Laboratory) unifies the unique, rigid and non-functional aspect of art to the softness or the hardness of the design-object functionality. The tension between the two forms creates an energy which is palpable into these unique objects. D&ALab confronts and prompts the artists to conceive a work with new techniques, a work that balances between art and design. Deciding where the limit will be set is the owner's role. D&ALab goes against the trend of mass production and chooses resolutely for the limited edition.
Twelve well-known artists as well as a few ones from the new generation have been invited so far to cooperate with D&ALab in order to create objects which bring art and design together: Pierre Bismuth, James Carrigan, Lionel Estève, Jan Fabre, Michel François, Ann Veronica Janssens, Perry Roberts, Simon Siegmann, Frédéric Tolmatcheff, Koen van den Broek,
Dimitri Vangrunderbeek, Jan Vercruysse, Freek Wambacq and Cindy Wright.
The cross-pollination between the creativity of the artists and the technical know how of the design industry has lead to surprising results.
D&ALab is Dirk Meylaerts and Bruno Rouffaer's concept; it is meant to combine the intelligence and the contents of the work of art to the functionality of the design-object.
Playing with the limit between the art object and the utilitarian object is D&ALab's challenge.
For each new creation, D&ALab is in search of the best manufacturing techniques and materials.
